SALEM TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY -- In one part of the Berwick area, people lined up for blocks to get gas for $1.99. The owner of the Food Express along East Fifth Street in Salem Township was offering a promotion for a couple days, but said prices would go back up to about $2.50 a gallon over the weekend.
"I can't remember the last time gas was $1.99," said Jen Seely of Nescopeck.
Seely was one of about a dozen cars lined up onto the next block of Fifth Street, waiting as long as 30 minutes to fill up.
"You better get it while you can -- cheap," said Ed Hutton of Berwick.
Jason Arner was also waiting for gas. He graduated from high school in 1999, when gas was less than 90 cents per gallon.
"I just saw that in the yearbook before, and I thought, 'Wow, those were the good old days,'" said Arner.
The owner of Food Express says he loses money by selling gas this cheap, but it builds the customer base and evens out in the end. But the drivers taking advantage of his deal hope the prices will stay relatively low.
"The way they're talking about the economy, I think it's going to stay down for a while," said Bill Farrel of Berwick. "But then, look out!"
And look closely at the $1.99 on the sign at Food Express, because it won't last forever.
