HARRISBURG, DAUPHIN COUNTY- The Mount Airy Casino Resort got a shove toward hitting the jackpot - opening Pennsylvania's first stand alone slots casino.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board approved Mount AIry's Independent Audit Committee Wednesday. Now the casino has scheduled a tentative grand opening for Monday. Ann Neeb of the PGCB said, "The opening of a casino is not a one or two day event. It's really about a four week event."
Before Mount Airy can open to the public, it has to hold two invitation only charity nights. If all goes well, that could happen Friday. "That's our opportunity to make sure all the different systems work - all the slots are working - the staff is trained in their duties," said Kevin Hayes of the PGCB.
Charity nights also help the gaming board double check the cash management system. Hayes explained, "That's the most important thing. The taxes are being counted, the tax revenue is being counted."
Once the casino opens - the new Audit Committee will oversee operations. One man who will not be on that committee is Sal Cognetti. He withdrew his application Wednesday but said he still supports Mount Airy's owner Louis Denaples. Denaples plead no contest to a federal fraud case in the 70s. Cognetti prosecuted that case.
Cognetti said, "That's 35 years ago. You judge a man by his whole life, not something that happened 30 years ago. I think we should judge Mr. Denaples by his whole life."
That life will soon include the title of pioneer of stand alone slots casinos in Pennsylvania.
