Girl Tells Court She Saw Stepfather Shoot Her Mom

Girl Tells Court She Saw Stepfather Shoot Her Mom - Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 5:55PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- Police say Donnell Buckner gunned down his wife, Kawaii Rogers-Buckner on March 29th, in front of their three children. He'll stand trial for murder, thanks in large part to the testimony of his 12-year-old stepdaughter.
Luzerne County Assistant D. A. Jarrett Ferentino said, "I was so impressed from the minute I met her. She did a great job today. I mean, these children saw their mother executed right before their very eyes."

Buckner's stepdaughter said he abused her mother several times. Kawaii Rogers-Buckner had a Protection From Abuse order against him.

Police say he showed up at their house on March 29th anyway, with a gun. The step-daughter testified he was angry about the PFA order, leading to the shooting. "There's not a lot that can be said beyond that. It's part of the investigation and we're going to address that more at trial," said Ferentino.

Buckner was on the run for nearly a day after the shooting. Police caught him hiding on top of the Great Northern Press Incorporated building off Gilligan Street.

He's pleading not guilty. Defense Attorney Peter Moses talked about Buckner's stepdaughter testifying. "None of us really looked forward to that but Donnell does have the legal right to a preliminary hearing. We exercised that right today," he said.

Kawaii Rogers-Buckner was going to Wilkes University nursing school and working full time. Now it may be up to a jury to decide if her husband was the person who killed her.

The couple's children, ages 12, 11 and 9, were under the care of children and youth after the murder. But now we understand they are staying with family members.
