Going Pink Stirs Up School Controversy - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 5:12PM EST

ARCHBALD, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- A Lackawanna County school district is taking a stand against students dying their hair pink.

Valley View School District is threatening detention and even suspension starting Thursday if students report to school with pink hair.

The pink hair streaking started earlier this month to raise awareness about breast cancer, but school administrators say the majority of several dozen students who dyed their hair did it just to break district rules.

We spoke to a student who dyed her hair and she doesn't understand why going pink is such a controversy. "I think it's pretty stupid because it's for a good cause and I had it for about a week and they didn't say anything until a few days ago. So, I think it's pretty dumb," said Valley View High School Junior Shauna Gething.

Parent Marla Marrazzo said, "I think they should be allowed the pink hair. They have awareness for every other cause around these days. They should be allowed to wear the pink hair."

Valley View school administrators say the crackdown is necessary because students could dye their hair other colors in the future to support other causes.
