WASHINGTON, D. C. --Government officials say employers and businesses across the country need to prepare now for the upcoming flu season. And that includes a possible increase in swine flu cases.

At a news conference this morning, officials with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Homeland Security said companies need to ease absentee policies in order for employees to stay home if they are sick or to care for sick children. They say employees need to know they will not be punished for missing work. Officials encourage managers to be flexible and to have a comprehensive plan in place.

Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security said "their critical employees have back-up. Cross training has occurred. Tele-commuting has been explored. Whatever needs to be done so that there's a continuation of operation at the critical business level."

Officials expect a vaccine for the swine flu --also called H1N1 to be available by mid-October. They recommend people should also get the regular seasonal flu shot as well. More details about how to prepare for the flu season are available at
