SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - We will find you. That is the message from the governor if you haven't paid your taxes.
Governor Ed Rendell stopped in Scranton Tuesday as a tax amnesty program is winding down. Rendell says there are 75,000 businesses and individuals in northeastern Pennsylvania who have not paid their fair share.
The governor says that money is needed as the June 30th state budget deadline looms.
"I think there's a chance that we will get there and get there on time," Rendell said.
With just 22 days until the state budget is due, Rendell seemed "somewhat" optimistic that a budget will be on time. He met with legislative leaders last week.
"There was a much more positive attitude about cobbling together a budget that gets us through this year," Rendell said.
Speaking of revenue, the real reason why Rendell was in Scranton was to remind people about a tax amnesty program that ends in just ten days.
It waives all penalties and half the interest for people who pay by June 18th.
"The total tax liability that's owed to the commonwealth is over two billion dollars. If we got all of that, think of what it would do for our budget situation," Rendell said.
Locally, the counties that had the most tax delinquent people are Luzerne, Lackawanna, Monroe, Schuylkill, Lycoming and Pike counties.
To be considered for PA Tax Amnesty, online applications must be completed and submitted at www. PATaxPayUp. com by midnight on June 18, 2010.
