Some people think getting guns off the street just might have prevented what happened at Club 570. Wednesday the Luzerne County D. A.'s office was buying back guns in West Hazleton.
For some in Luzerne County it was about giving up cold steel for cold hard cash - or at least coupons. Theresa Dvorsak said, ÒI think it's a great deal- a great deal. You can use the money for something else.Ó
Sights were set - at the West Hazleton Senior Center as the location for today's gun buyback program - offering certificates for use at the laurel mall - in return for an unwanted weapon.
Representative Todd Eachus said, ÒMany times when guns aren't used they lay around and get stolen.. Or they get in the hands in juveniles who misuse them. This keeps the guns out of the bad guys hands.Ó
The guns being brought in today run the gamut - from the common - to the unusual - to the downright illegal.
Luzerne County D. A. Jackie Musto Carroll said, ÒThe ultimate goal is to get as many unwanted off the street as possible...there are many guns that are found in attics in basements people don't know what to do with them - how to get rid of them. This is a very safe way. They can turn the gun and they can make a few dollars as well.Ó
The trigger for the buyback program - was a $10,000 grant from the state and all guns brought in - will be tagged - and ultimately destroyed.
Richard Dvorscak said, ÒBe on the safe side get Ôem out of the house and you don't have to worry about them.Ó | |
