Hackett Beats Mueser in 10th Congressional District - Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 5:32PM EST

DALLAS, LUZERNE COUNTY - One day after a political slug-fest in the 10th congressional district, Chris Hackett is already looking toward his next opponent, Chris Carney. Hackett beat his opponent Dan Meuser by 3,000 votes Tuesday night. On Wednesday, Meuser admitted defeat.

Hackett says he feels good about the win, but right now is concerned about fundraising and getting the right message out to voters. Incumbent Chris Carney has more than one million dollars in his warchest.

Many political experts say the rural counties of the 10th congressional district will be key to winning the race. At Marsha's Diner in Sugar Hollow, Wyoming County, people spent lunchtime pouring over newspapers.

"I'd probably vote for Chris Hackett. We haven't heard much from Chris Carney in this area. He hasn't done too much in this area," Al Beebe of Factoryville said.

Not everyone felt the same way. Many people say Carney is still learning the ropes in Washington.

"I think he's done a decent job. He's been there for only one term. It's hard to evaluate somebody the first year. They're basically a freshman," Mike Slacktish of Dallas said.

Less than 12 hours after becoming the republican nominee, Hackett was back in his campaign office making phone calls.

"I believe that we're going to be very successful in building a base of support in both sides as we move forward," Hackett said.

As for being a virtual unknown, he says that will work to his advantage in November.

"I think it's actually an advantage. I think what we need are fewer politicians in Washington and what we need are people looking to the future, not worried about the next election," Hackett said.

Political experts say the 10th congressional district race is one of the two most important races for republicans to win this November.

Dan Meuser declined all media interviews on Wednesday. Instead, he released a short statement. It said "We are disappointed. Our many supporters throughout the district expected us to win and effectively represent them in the general election and in Congress."
