Hanover Township Facing Big Tax Hike

Hanover Township Facing Big Tax Hike - Monday, January 18, 2010 at 6:34PM EST

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY- People living in Hanover Township are facing the largest tax hike in Luzerne County .

This comes at a time when the county itself is raising property tax by 10%. A change in a garbage bill, a bad economy and businesses leaving town are three reasons Hanover Township is facing the largest tax increase in Luzerne County in 2010.

In all, homeowners in Hanover Township are facing about a 160-percent increase in taxes. It's something Stan Greskewicz says he just can't afford. "I don't know what they're doing with it or where it's going. I just don't know. I can't afford it, I'm on a fixed income," said Greskewicz.

Hanover Township commissioner’s chairman Al Bagusky tells us homeowners can expect the following: Homeowners that paid $410 in taxes last year can expect to pay $550 this year. That's an estimate based on a $100-thousand home.

But Bagusky says there's reasons for the rise. The Township got rid of its garbage fee for 2010. That's a service that will be paid for by this new tax increase. That could be a $200 increase on some tax bills this year.

Bagusky says the Township also raised taxes because three car dealerships left the San Souci Parkway . That took taxpaying businesses off the book so the township needed to make up ground. Hanover Township is facing about a $250-thousand budget shortfall, something this tax hike could help pay down so there's not a similar hike next year.
