HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY -- People living here are wondering what exactly happened to 58-year-old Catherine Moore on Thursday. She was found with a severe head injury Thursday afternoon and died Friday morning at the Lehigh Valley Medical Center.
Lehigh County Coroner, Scott Grim, tells Eyewitness News Moore's death is "suspicious," but the cause and manner of death are pending further investigation. Detectives with the Hazleton Police Department and Luzerne County District Attorney's office are working on the case and had no comment Saturday afternoon.
Moore's family tells us she went shopping with her granddaughter, Ashley Moore, on Thursday and returned home around noon. Ashley says she left around 12:15pm. About two hours later, Moore's grandson, Clifford Moore, Jr. came home from school to find her lying unresponsive at the bottom of the stairs with blood everywhere. She was taken to the Lehigh Valley Medical Center, where she died the next morning.
Saturday afternoon, Moore's family members made a makeshift memorial on the front porch of their home at 127 N. Church Street, complete with a cross, teddy bear, and candles -- Ashley says her grandmother's favorite candles were green.
Catherine Moore's husband, Wilson, didn't talk to us on-camera. But he says Hazleton is now without one of its best women. Wilson and Ashley say everyone knew Catherine because of her frequent yard sales. They say, if people needed something she didn't have, she would try to find it for them. They said they found her list of those items.
We spoke with several neighbors who also didn't want to go on-camera. One mother told us she's concerned, especially if Moore's death is the result of an assault. She says her children play in the neighborhood, and she now fears for their safety.
Moore's family members tell us they believe she was attacked, and they think the person knew Catherine. Otherwise, they say, her dog would've attacked the person. However, the dogs were put in the back yard at some point between Ashley leaving and Clifford coming home, and they don't believe it was Catherine.
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call 9-1-1.
