WASHINGTON D. C. - The monumental, and controversial, Healthcare Reform Bill is now all but a done deal.
The House passed the measure by a slim margin of 219 votes to 212.
Every Republican and 34 Democrats voted no.
For President Obama the year long battle for reform looks to be ending in a win.
He said in a statement last night, "Today's vote answers the prayers of every American who has hoped deeply for something to be done about a health care system that works for insurance companies but not for ordinary people."
President Obama still must put his signature on the reform.
Yesterday he promised to issue an executive order banning public money for abortions.
The Senate has to approve a package of compromises and then the bill becomes law.
Here's what's in the bill: An expansion of Medicaid to cover more families A mandate for individuals to buy healthcare or be fined. Subsidies will provided to those who can't afford coverage. Insurance company regulations including ending denying coverage based upon pre-existing conditions. The total plan costs 875 billion dollars. The congressional budget office says it will lower the deficit by 118 billion dollars in the next 10 years.. | |
