SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Officials at United Neighborhood Centers in Scranton are looking for help with their annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Program.
Lisa Durkin from UNC says the agency served about 700 families during the holiday last year. This year registrations for the holiday baskets have already exceeded 1,000 with an additional 400 to 500 applications still expected.
The shelves that usually hold supplies for the food basket program are nearly empty. That's because the agency's daily food give away program has been trying to meet an increasing demand for help. UNC Communications Director Julianne Kalasinski says, "At this time we do not have enough funds to feed all these families on Thanksgiving."
The agency is hoping public and corporate donations will help restock the supply shelves and provide enough food to meet both daily demands and to fill the Thanksgiving food baskets.
