STROUD TOWNSHIP - A Pocono family wants to get the word out about a special program to help people with disabilities. It's through an organization that can help make your home handicapped accessible and get you a home health care aid. Many people take a trip to the garden for granted. But for Bruce Bayer being able to walk to the garden is a miracle. "I have congestive heart failure, COPD, diabetes, five back operations and a neck fusion," he explained.
Last fall a doctor told Bruce he had just three months to live. But he proved the doctor wrong. Bruce regained some of his health but lost most of his independence. "There's days I can't get out of bed. There's days I can't do anything," he said.
Then his wife Angela found some help. An organization called Liberty Resources. She said, "It was by coincidence, word of mouth, that we heard about this company."
Before Liberty Resources got involved Bruce felt trapped inside the house because he'd have to go down stairs to get out but then Liberty paid for the family to put in a ramp and a stair chair. "This is the greatest thing that every happened to me," said Bruce.
While the family is thankful for the home improvements. They're even more thankful that Liberty Resources pays for a home healthcare aid. Marcia takes care of Bruce while Angela runs a daycare. Angela said, "I feel more comfortable and more at ease knowing my husband is being taken care of while I'm busy with children."
And Bruce feels more comfortable with his new found independence, enjoying afternoons in his garden. The program is funded through the state and federal government. For more information visit .
