Hepburn Township Carnival on the Move

Hepburn Township Carnival on the Move - Monday, May 4, 2009 at 5:12PM EST

Hepburn Township, Lycoming County-
A local firemen’s carnival is moving into new territory. The Hepburn Township Volunteer Fire Company carnival gets underway Monday night.

It’s now being held at the company’s headquarters on Route 973.

The old carnival grounds are owned by the Diocese of Scranton, and the food service buildings need major upgrades.

Hepburn Township Fire Chief Jeffrey Tempesco explained, “We had some choices to make. We could build new buildings on ground we don’t own...or we could move here, have one kitchen, and try to be a little bit money responsible, especially with the financial situation today.”

The fire company expanded its parking lot to accommodate all the rides and stands.

It’s important because the carnival is a major money maker for them. It’s how they maintain all their vehicles and equipment.

Tempesco noted “(The) last thing we want to do is go ask for a tax increase, all we ask for is the community’s support.”

With all the rides, games, food, and entertainment, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

Jerry Bartlebaugh, owner of Bartlebaugh’s Amusements, said, “We offer arm bands, ride all night, so it’s pay one price for the family. Hopefully with the economy being bad, people still have time to come out, enjoy the carnival, and support the fire company.”

And that’s the goal here. Firefighters say in addition to being a great fundraiser, the carnival is all about making sure everyone gets out and has a good time.

They just hope Mother Nature cooperates.

Tempesco added, “We’ll get a few nice nights in, and if we don’t, we’ll come looking for (WBRE Chief Meteorologist) Josh (Hodell).”

Again, the Hepburn Township Volunteer Fire Company carnival starts Monday at six and runs through Saturday.
