Heroes of the Recession - Mother's Day
Heroes of the Recession - Mother's Day - Monday, May 4, 2009 at 5:16PM EST
Our "Heroes of the Recession" takes many different forms. This week a local couple who own a jewelry store wanted to give back to a community that's done so much for them.
After ten years in the jewelry business, Kim Duffy noticed a growing trend when the recession hit. "We had a lot of mothers coming in, selling their jewelry, their heirlooms to put food on their tables and make ends meet," she said.
She and her husband George made a decision -- to give back to those same people for Mother's Day. "So we're going to be giving away a strong silver mother and child necklace or engraveable earrings," she added.
The only catch is… "If they can bring in proof that they've lost their jobs or going into foreclosure, we just need to see that and some ID and they can pick what they like," said Kim.
George & Co. has 100 pieces of jewelry to give away. While they say they might not be reaching everyone in this time of need, customers say this act of kindness can make all the difference.
Cindy Cox of Scranton said, "I think it would give them hope and a restored sense of, "wow, there's people out there that really care about me."
Cox's son Bradley will do something for his mommy on Mother's Day because… “I love her," he said.
The Duffys know not everyone can afford to buy mother's day presents, so they're ignoring their profits. "Yeah, it is coming from our pockets, but it's coming from our hearts also," said Kim.
Cox said, "To see a local company reach into their own pockets and help the local community, says a lot. I think out of bad things, good things usually do come."
And that's a trend they all hope continues.
Duffy says the jewelry giveaway is this Wednesday and Thursday only. It's first come, first served. You must have proof of job loss or home foreclosure. | |
