High-Risk Rescue Training for Firefighters - Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 5:38PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- Firefighters in Scranton spent the day preparing for high-risk rescues.

Eyewitness News checked out the training exercise Sunday afternoon at the Scranton Sewer Authority.

The city's bravest were learning more about trench rescues. Utility crews dig trenches for power, gas and water lines. If someone becomes trapped, firefighters jump into action.

They say it might not happen often, but when it does -- it's extremely dangerous. Mike Grimes of ScrantonÕs Rescue 1 said, "It's a very low occurrence, high-risk type of thing so when it does occur you only have one shot to do it right... very dangerous."

The entire Scranton fire company took part in the training in the past four days.
