Towanda, Bradford County-

21st century technology is helping a 19th century Bradford County landmark to "go green."

Built as an opera house in 1886, the Keystone Theatre in Towanda is a rich part of the history of the borough. Raul Azpiazu works in Towanda. He said, "I've been here since 1964 and we've been to many movies over the years and other events at the Keystone Theatre, and now that they seem to be improving it as much as they can, it's a very big asset to the community."

The marquee in front of the theatre was built in the 1920's. Its frame was rusting, leaking, and the sign was short circuiting. Theater officials say the old marquee was dangerous, because light bulbs were constantly being changed, and it actually stuck out too far into the road, causing it to be hit occasionally by passing trucks.

Bradford County Regional Arts Council Executive Director Brooks Eldredge-Martin said, "The theaters are elegant old buildings and we need to retain the flavor as much as possible."

So the marquee, which used to feature 440 incandescent bulbs spelling the word, KEYSTONE, is finally getting a makeover. And the bulbs are being replaced by energy-efficient L. E.D. technology.

"We designed a re-built marquee that would look effectively the same for historical purposes, and would not only last for a long time, but would be 'green' in terms of electrical use," Eldredge-Martin explained.

"We're catching up with the times. They're definitely more efficient and it's going to give a new look to a nice old building, with a little bit of a classier touch," Azpiazu added.

The sixty thousand dollar project is being paid for through a combination of state grants and local fundraisers. The new marquee should be up in about three weeks. The Keystone Theatre will remain open while the work is completed.
