Holiday Weekend Traffic Troubles

Holiday Weekend Traffic Troubles - Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 11:09PM EST

NUANGOLA, LUZERNE COUNTY - Emergency roadwork on part of Interstate 81 caused big back-ups for drivers returning from their holiday weekends.
Cars and trucks were slowly creeping along Interstate 81-Northbound in the Nuangola-area late Sunday afternoon. PennDOT closed one lane of the highway for four miles, which led to big delays.

"I was pretty annoyed to find out it was road construction. I was really annoyed," Katy Thomas said. Thomas, who is from Binghamton, was just one driver looking to get home. It took her an hour to go ten miles.

"It was really bad. It was really bad. I was surprised that there was so many people on the road and with all the economy and issues and stuff like that," Thomas said.

James Danoff-Burg of Albany was another frustrated driver. He stopped to take his dog for a walk after waiting in stalled traffic.

"This route is usually a pretty good one. We were down in Washington, DC, going to Albany and we tried to avoid the turnpike, so we thought we'd come up through Pennsylvania and see beautiful Pennsylvania, but today, it was a nightmare," Danoff-Burg said.
