Holy Redeemer High School To Honor Fallen Student
Holy Redeemer High School To Honor Fallen Student - Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at 2:31PM EST
WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY - G uidance and grief counselors were on-hand to help students at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes-Barre cope with the loss of Ian Pope.
Pope was a junior. He was driving along Northampton Street in Edwardsville Tuesday afternoon shortly after school let out. Pope crashed into a utility pole and died. His two passengers were also hurt. All three juniors were members of the school's soccer team.
Wednesday morning, counselors were on hand to support students, but many parents kept their kids home due to the weather. The school’s principal says once funeral arrangements are made for Pope, the school will consider arranging a time for students and staff to come together to remember him. They'll make that information available on the school's web site.
“The Holy Redeemer family suffered a great loss. Ian was a great person. A great soccer player and most importantly, a great human being. He’s going to be missed,” said Robert Hughes, Pope’s soccer coach.
"It's shocking to lose one of your best friends. He was a great soccer player, a good person. It's just shocking to lose him," said friend, Vince Sperduto.
There are plaques on the school wall commemorating the lives of four students who previously died while at Holy Redeemer. The most recent death happened eight years ago. | |
