Williamsport, Lycoming County-

The cost to heat your home is expected to reach record highs this winter. We took a look at some of the creative ways people are finding to cut back.

As an oil tanker pulls up to make a delivery, homeowners around the area begin to think about the price they’ll pay to stay warm.

Geoffrey Platt, of Williamsport, said, “Prices being what they are, and the economy being what it is, it isn’t going to be easy.”

Like Platt, who just moved here from New York, many people are starting to consider where they can pinch a few pennies.

Platt explained, “I know I’ll be walking around with a sweater and slippers on most of the winter. And probably cutting back on entertainment and dining out and so forth.”

And there are other ways you can help yourself.

Mike McGee, of A-1 Oil Company in South Williamsport, suggests checking prices around the area to find the best deals, and seeking other help.

McGee noted, “People on limited income should apply for fuel assistance.”

He says people might also consider downsizing if they’re living in a home that is larger than they need. Ordering fuel early can help as well.

McGee cautioned, “When you get down to about a quarter tank of fuel you should order your fuel. You don’t want to run out because when you run out most fuel companies are going to charge you an extra fee to run special.”

For some, the best answer, when possible, is to avoid purchasing expensive fuel altogether.

Maurice Woodside is spending his vacation chopping wood for his fireplace, and preparing for a harsh winter.

He said, “Work a lot of overtime. You know, fix your windows, make sure your house is sealed really well. In the wintertime don’t go out, don’t let the heat escape I guess.”

Maurice says he doesn’t blame the oil companies for trying to make money, but he’ll brace for the bitter cold his own way. “The rich get richer, and we cut more wood,” he explained.

LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, opens on November 3rd. Contact your local county assistance office or call 1-866-857-7095 for more information.
