HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY- A major bridge construction project is moving forward in Wayne County. The work is having an effect on local and regional traffic.

It's been estimated that as many as 20,000 cars a day travel through Honesdale in Wayne County and a good deal of that traffic crosses the Lackawaxen River. That's where PennDOT is involved in a major construction project that will change the flow of traffic in town. Main Street, for instance, will become a one way street.

Pat Resti of Leeward Construction is in charge of this major construction project. "We're actually putting two bridges in. We're changing the direction of traffic going north and south on Huirch and Main streets. There's going to be one, two, three, four new intersections when done. Hopefully that will help everything out" Resti explained.

It's a 9 million dollar project. Honesdale residents like Fred Marsh said it's a project that's long overdue. "For years traffic, in the mornings and on school days, has backed up way beyond the library. It needs two lanes south bound" declared Marsh.

The work, of course, will occasionally cause some delays. But most motorists are taking things in stride.

Debbie Stiefel of Hawley declared "Right now it’s a bit of a hassle because of all the construction delays. But, hopefully, it will be a good thing once it’s all open."

There are those with mixed reactions to the planned changes. Mark Eldred manages Dean Fowler's Full Service Gulf Station on Main Street. He explained "I look at it as a positive thing. I'm not 100% sure on the new traffic pattern. It has the potential of causing some more congestion or making it worse. But I think if they do it right there's positive potential there."

The construction work is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
