Honoring Sheriff Charles Morelli - Monday, March 9, 2009 at 5:25PM EST
WAYMART - A beloved community member was laid to rest Monday. Hundreds of people attended the funeral for Wayne County Sheriff Charles Morelli died last week. He was 67-years-old.
Dozens of law enforcement members road in Charles Morelli's funeral procession. They honored his career in corrections and as the Wayne County Sheriff. Wayne County Commissioner Tony Herzog said, "He was an outstanding public servant and he will be missed by all."
Dozens of community leaders saluted their friend one last time. They honored his community service, especially the way he helped veterans and children through the American Legion. Jim Legion of Post 807 in Hamlin said, "He worked very hard for us doing that. Including teaching the children, taking them to the courthouse, teaching them about law enforcement."
Dozens of friends and neighbors stood in the rain waiting to say goodbye. They honored the friendship and caring he brought into their lives. Scott Bennett of Honesdale said, "Charlie was always someone you could count on."
Dozens of family members cried as pallbearers carried Morelli into the church. They honored the love and laughter he gave them. Caroline Forbes of Lake Ariel said he was, "A wonderful man. Everything you hear about him is the truth. He was a gentle giant. That's what I called him."
Charles Morelli; you may have known him simply as the Wayne County Sheriff. Now you know he was also a loved community member, neighbor and friend. "He did his very best for his family, for his community, for his county," said Herzog.
