Honoring the Heroes Among Us - Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 04:01AM EST

Wednesday May 12 2010
SCOTRUN, MONROE COUNTY - Four people who used their own life situations to help others were honored as "Heroes Among us."

They shared their experiences at Great Wolf Lodge during a breakfast put on by the Interagency Council of Monroe County. John Moyer was one of the speakers.

A devastating shock, the sudden death of his son, lead John Moyer to become an advocate for machines that deliver life saving shocks. They're called Automatic External Defibrillators or AEDs.

He told the breakfastgroup he last saw his son Gregory about ten years ago. He recalled, "He was the best kid you could ever come across."

Gregory was fifteen when he suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrest during a high school basketball game. Moyer said, "We were summoned into the locker room because he was lying on the floor unconscious."

The school did not have an AED. By the time an ambulance arrived with one it was too late.

So John and his wife Rachel made it their mission to getAEDs placed in public buildings. AEDs that the M oyers have donated have saved at least five lives." Moyer said, "When a life is saved in our heads we think boy that was a great thing but in our heart it only reminds us of the tragedy that we faced. So it's bittersweet. "

Because his family used a tragedy to help others - John was honored as one of four"Heroes Among Us."

Event organizer Cindi Starner said, "They all said that they really were not heroes but in our eyes they are." Moyer reacted, "We look at ourselves as people that have suffered a tragedy that we'd not lie to see happen again."

The heroes proved you can turn personal pain into a passion for helping others. Starner said, "It just left all of us feeling inspired."

The Moyer family is working with lawmakers to pass a bill that would require all Pennsylvania schools to have defibrilators.

They also want schools to screen students for potentially deadly heart conditions.
