Hospital Sexual Assault Response Team will Return Soon - Monday, April 14, 2008 at 5:10PM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG - Women's Resources says one out of every three women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. That's why they want people to remember April is sexual assault awareness month.

Pocono Medical Center will soon be able to better help victims of rape and sexual assault. They plan to bring back their Sexual Assault Response Team.

"We're hoping in the next few weeks to probably in the May time period actually having the team those nurses trained and able to do forensic exams," said hospital spokesman Anthony Matrisciano.

The team at the hospital will include a specially trained nurse, police, an investigator from the District Attorney's Office, and a representative from Women's Resources all in one place.

The team fell apart more than four months ago when its leader left the hospital staff. Pocono Medical Center said it was a top priority to bring the team back and Women's Resources of Monroe County agrees.

"I would love to see less of a need for our services but because our community is growing I just don't think that is really realistic," said Counselor Maureen Krinsky.

She said as Monroe County's population expands the need for services has gone through the roof. They even have to build more office space to keep up.

She said, "You've seen on the front page of the paper a couple of gang rapes that have occurred. I don't remember it being like that - say 20 years ago in Monroe County."

Since April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, counselors want to get the message out that it's ok to ask for help even if you were assaulted years ago.

"The process is like going to the dentist. A lot of people don't want to go to the dentist, it sounds painful, they don't want to go through with it, in the end what they're left with is a better, more intact, whole self," said Krinsky.

And the renewal of the Sexual Assault Response Team will make it even easier for healing to begin.

Pocono Medical Center officials said over the past four months victims could still see doctors at the hospital, they just didn't receive that specialized assault counseling and evidence collection.
