KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY- A new police officer is getting ready to hit the streets in Luzerne County and you can help him become "street ready."
His name is "Stinger." He’s the new K-9 cop in Kingston. Kingston will soon have its newest officer on the beat full-time, and the public is being invited to help out with a special event.
Stinger is an adult Doberman Pincher. He is the partner of Sgt. Sam Blaski. The two have been working together for several weeks now. They are in the middle of training. "Right now we're getting along very well. It’s still a new thing so we’re still in the bonding stage. Every day is a training day with him," said Blaski.
Stinger will replace Sgt. Blaski's longtime K-9 partner, Macso, who died unexpectedly in July. A monument in honor of him is in front of the police department.
Stinger will take on all types of duties: crowd control, tracking, and of course, drug investigations. "A lot of drug dealers won't come to town when they know you have a drug dog," said Blaski.
And it’s a growing problem in Kingston says Chief Keith Keiper. "We have a big influx of drugs in town and he's a valuable tool to help us fight the drugs that are coming to town," he said.
Stinger needs additional training that will cost between $7,000 and $15,000, money the borough does not have. So a fundraiser is being held this Saturday, October 4th at the Kingston Recreation Center. It’s a day full of special events for everyone, but especially the kids.
