KINGSTON - No shelves, no books, no computers. No one has used one section of the Hoyt Library since the roof collapsed one year ago. Last Valentine's Day Mother Nature dropped off a horror story.
Library Director David Marks said, "We had had snow. We had ice and then we had snow and then more ice."
The roof couldn't support the weight and caved in. "The book shelves were supporting the roof," said Marks.
He said Mother Nature wrote the first chapter but he was determined to edit in a happy ending. Crews cleaned the mess and the library partially opened in June. Officials then drafted a plan to make the Hoyt Library better than ever. "If the plans go forward as they have been drawn up in design, we'll have a two floor library," said Marks.
Library officials plan to double its size - they just need some money. They got a $2 million insurance check from the roof collapse but they still need a million more.
Marks says he is waiting for officials to turn the page and announce whether or not the library can get a grant from state gambling revenue.
The library has to wait about a month before anyone finds out whether or not the storm story has a fairytale ending. Officials will make a decision on the grant on March 14th. | |
