MOUNT POCONO, MONROE COUNTY - A man working for a tree cutting company found bones in the woods of Mount Pocono Thursday morning. He spotted them just off of an embankment near Knox Street at about ten a. m.
"I can't believe it. i'm in shock," said Erin Brauer of Pocono Summit. She and many others stopped to stare as police and investigators gathered in Mount Pocono to solve a mystery.
Pocono Mountain Regional Police Lieutenant Chris Wagner said, "The skeletal remains do appear to be very old - possibly in excess of a year." He added it's too early to tell whether or not the person's death was suspicious. He said they could belong to a man who went missing a few years ago but he couldn't share the man's name. "It's very preliminary to speculate whether that is this person or not," he explained.
Wagner told Eyewitness News the bones were covered with at least one season's worth of leaves and debris. Forensic experts will help police figure out who the remains belong to and how long they were in the woods. "Depending on what we find we may be calling in an entomologist to study insect and larva that may be around the scene," said Wagner.
Chief Deputy Coroner Jody Hutton said it could take a while before we learn anything about the bones. She explained, "Skeletal remain investigations can take days - obviously these people are difficult sometimes to identify based on what we'll be able to find down there."
Wagner added, "It's something we train for and we prepare for and we're fully confident we can bring it to a conclusion and identify who this person was."
That area of 940 will be closed until at least 8 Thursday night. | |
