SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- Hundreds and hundreds of people turned out Saturday in Scranton to honor our military men and women. The 11th Armed Forces Parade paid tribute to all who serve or have served our country. Some used the parade as a way to teach others about patriotism.

A pipe band plays while hoisting the American flag at the Armed Forces Parade in downtown Scranton. The annual salute in May to servicemen and women stepped off from the home of nearly 200 vets -- the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center.

Korean War Vet Arlington Phillips of Scranton has volunteered at the Merli Center since it opened nearly two decades ago. As someone who fought in what's been called "The Forgotten War", he's pleased current military members are publicly acknowledged. "These young boys really deserve it. They're going through hell just like the rest of us did, he said.

Navy Veteran Bob Rogers and his family show their appreciation. They stood along Mulberry Street to support the troops past and present. "We've never missed this parade and this is where we usually come to watch it," he said.

He wants his grandkids to understand what the military is all about. He also wants to set a personal example. "I'm not above waving the flag and saluting the flag and taking my hat off to the flag and I want them to feel the same way," added Rogers.

With flags waved and displayed all along the parade route, it's a feeling of patriotic pride. This parade is also an opportunity for a local Cub Scout leader to teach his young pack a valuable lesson. Joseph Kalinowski of Cub Scout Pack 66 in Dunmore said, "You have a duty to your country and the men and ladies, the armed forces, they serve. They are fulfilling that duty to our country. And I think that shows a lot to our boys and it shows them the importance of serving in the military."

The grand marshal for this year's armed forces parade was Carl Weinschenk, the retired Commandant of the Merli Veterans Center.
