Hundreds Rally Against Reassessment - Monday, August 18, 2008 at 5:18PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- The anti-reassessment rallying cry boiled over at the Luzerne County Courthouse Monday. Hundreds of people from Luzerne County turned out to sound off about the controversial issue.

Many carried signs, some carried bull horns. They gathered around a giant inflatable pig too. They’re voicing their unhappiness over new property values. They believe their homes were appraised too high, raising their taxes. Some even want to break away from Luzerne County and join Wyoming County.

Commissioner Maryanne Petrilla emerged from the courthouse to address the crowd but was largely drowned out by boos and jeers. Petrilla and Commissioner Steve Urban say they won’t support a motion by Commissioner Greg Skrepenak to delay the reassessment process.

That motion could be introduced on Wednesday at the County Commissioners meeting. It’s scheduled for 1PM at Luzerne County Community College. It was moved from its regular courthouse location to accommodate the expected large crowd.
