JACKSON TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY - It was a beautiful day for the annual Delaware River Clean up. More than 400 volunteers fished trash out of a 40 mile stretch of the river. It included parts of Monroe and Pike Counties.

River District Ranger AJ North described the event as the "annual in on and under the Delaware River Clean up."

While the river scenery looks beautiful from a boat, there is a lot of garbage hiding along the banks and under the water. AJ said, "Some of these things that are out here could potentially cause some pollution episodes at some point in time."

Volunteer Beth Avera said, "I think people think oh it's just one wrapper or one can it's not gonna make a difference but it really adds up."

This year volunteers pulled out less trash than usual and organizers say that could be for several different reasons. AJ explained with less people visiting the river because of the economy, there is naturally less garbage.

Volunteer Tom Pogrinicki thinks there may be another reason. He said, "We can see that it's getting cleaner each year and people are respecting nature."

Since 2006, volunteers have pulled more than 90 tons of trash from the Delaware River.
