WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- 375,000 letters have been sent out by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare to notify behavioral health customers of an identity theft risk.
Letters were dated close to three weeks after the break-in occurred at the Harrisburg state office building, according to a spokesman for the Capitol Police. They said the intruder entered August 22 through a first-floor window and swiped two computers containing confidential information, social security numbers and other health data.
An anonymous man from Taylor received one of the letters. He said "things should be under lock and key. It's that important."
No one from the state's department of public welfare returned repeated calls from WBRE. There's also no answer on the delay of information release by the state given the valuable nature of material reportedly contained on the computer systems.
