I-81 Bridge Work Ahead of Schedule

I-81 Bridge Work Ahead of Schedule - Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 7:05PM EST

MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- You could soon see big changes to Interstate 81 north. If the weather cooperates, the Moosic exit will be in a different place. It'll help make way for a bridge re-decking project. Drivers have seen prep-work on that project for months.

Cars drive smoothly off the Moosic exit 180 on Interstate 81 north. But starting Tuesday, things could be a lot different. Drivers will have to exit about a half mile sooner and use this temporary roadway. It could cause congestion.

Gary Schiener drives a truck for Sarno and Son formal wear. He says more traffic delays would mean more headaches. The exit change will make way to finish a temporary roadway for a bridge re-decking project. One more section needs to be finished on this roadway to completely shift 81 north traffic during the project.

Daril Davis of Wilkes-Barre thinks this is a bad time to do this project. He says the project is already causing enough traffic jams.

But by Christmas, PennDOT says this temporary road will be running smoothly. PennDOT says the safer the driver, the smaller the traffic jam.

This temporary roadway wasn't expected to be open until spring, but the weather's cooperated. This whole bridge re-decking project is scheduled to wrap up by fall of 2010.
