I-TEAM: Circuit City Liquidation Sale Not a Good Deal

I-TEAM: Circuit City Liquidation Sale Not a Good Deal - Friday, January 30, 2009 at 5:55PM EST

If you're thinking of buying a new tv to watch the big game this weekend, you may not want to shop at Circuit City. The I-Team found there aren't as many deals as the liquidation sale ads tout. Consumer and I-Team reporter Jeff Chirico is live in Wilkes-Barre Township with what he found.
All 500 plus Circuit City's must get rid of everything by the end of March. But the I-Team found the country's second largest electronics chain isn't blowing any circuits in sales just yet.

The signs say nothing's held back... except maybe the discounts. Jack Baranski of Larksville says “there were some. I wasn't overly impressed." Our undercover camera found signs touting sales ten, to twenty five percent off - not enough for Jeff Scatton. "Basically looking for a pc and prices weren't that much better." That's because the liquidators discounted the full list price, not the most recent sale price.

So are you really getting a deal? The I-Team found you can do better.

For instance Circuit City discounted a 46” Panasonic plasma from $1900 to $1425. But we found the same set from Amazon. com for $1148 with free shipping. That's $277 less.

A 52” Samsung did cost $2900 --slashed to $2320. But bhphotovideo. com sells it for $1999.95. $320 less.

An Olympus Digital Camera regularly $179.99 is slashed to $143.99. But Best Buy is selling the same camera for 4 dollars less than that. $139.99. Not all that much --but here all sales are final. “I saw a sign. I cannot return. If something goes wrong I have a problem."

A company running the sale defends the prices saying, we have commitments to banks and creditors who are expecting a certain return. And they say prices will drop more in the future --if there's anything left.

So my advice, look around and compare prices online before you buy. Just because a sign says 20 -30 -40 percent off, doesn't mean that's the best deal. We're live in Wilkes-Barre Township, Jeff Chirico, Eyewitness News.
