I-Team: Are Treasure Hunters Paying Enough?

I-Team: Are Treasure Hunters Paying Enough? - Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 5:45PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY --You've heard the saying one man's trash is another man's treasure. This week, some out-of-state treasure hunters are in town. They want to pay cash for your trash. But are you really getting what your stuff is worth?
On Wednesday morning, this banquet room at the Ramada in Wilkes-Barre begins to fill with folks hoping to walk away richer. Carolyn and Charlie Rydzy of Dupont will soon sit down with one of these buyers from a North Carolina company hosting "The Great Treasure Hunt". "We'll look at their items, give them a free appraisal, give an offer to buy the items and pay them in cash" says Will Whitaker. He and his crew travel the country buying jewelry, artwork, sports memorabilia then resell it for a profit. "What we're here to do is offer a service to the local people to sell items they're not using."

But local jeweler and auctioneer Rose Wateski of Rainbow Jewelers in Kingston worries consumers could get shortchanged. “They come in for two three days and never going to see you again. You're better off sticking with local business you know they're going to be around." Rose also suggests you shop around for the best offer. Treasure hunt buyers admit they don't formally appraise your possessions. They offer a good guess.

But Rose has another concern...the full page ad in local papers looks like a news article claiming hundreds are flocking to the famous Roadshow . "They're making it sound like the antiques road show. But it's not." Even Carolyn thought she was here for the PBS program. "I read this in the paper and I'm always curious when I watch it on TV." “Do you think this ad is misleading? We don't make it that way intentionally. But are you famous? The ad says you are. I never heard of you before. We have been in business longer than the Antiques Roadshow."

The Great Treasure Hunt will be at the Ramada in Wilkes-Barre and the Hampton Inn in Williamsport through Saturday.

A tip for trying to find out what your old stuff is really worth, look on ebay and other auction sites for something similar. That's basically how the guys at the treasure hunt do it.
