I-Team Checks Out Wilkes-Barre School Board Meeting

I-Team Checks Out Wilkes-Barre School Board Meeting - Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 12:09PM EST

Wednesday, Oct 21, 2009 @ 12:09am EDT
WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- Wilkes-Barre Area School board President Frank Pizzella says he'll only talk about school district business.
That's at least what the piece of paper said that he handed us before Tuesday night's meeting.
He won't talk about the charges against him.
And he won't mention being the third school board member now implicated in a snowballing corruption investigation.
After the early evening meeting, some people drifted out.
The meeting had wrapped up.
But the entire school board stayed behind.
Pizzella showed up in a green Volkswagen Passat.
Around 6-30, a man in orange shirt moved the car to a nearby Turkey Hill parking lot stumping us.
Now, eight school board members, including Pizzella, remained behind in the administration building, some not to emerge for two hours.
The whole time, the doors were locked.
Eyewitness News has received conflicting information about what was discussed at this closed session.
An attorney for the board said no district business was mentioned.
If there had been, it would have been a violation of the Sunshine Law.
And even though there was a voting majority of the board, the attorney said there were no private discussions, personnel or otherwise.
So what were they doing?
Reached by phone, Superintendent Jeff Namey disputed the attorney's comments, saying the attorney was wrong. And there were personnel discussions, meaning the board would have entered into a privileged executive session.
He said maybe the attorney wasn't present during those conversations.
But one school board member expanded our curiosity.
He said there was no executive session.
As for Pizzella, we never saw him the rest of the night .
