I-Team Undercover Gym Germs Investigation

I-Team Undercover Gym Germs Investigation - Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 6:00PM EST

When you're talking about keeping your gym germ free, Brown’s Gym owner Jim Brown says, "You're fighting an invisible enemy. All you can do is clean and hope you got it."
Gym owners know just how important it is to keep things clean. Danko's Fitness Center owner Larry Danko says, "In our business we take pride in keeping our fitness center clean."

Odyssey General Manager Shivaun O'Donnell says, "We definitely think it's important to keep things clean"

The I-Team put the cleanliness claim to the test. We went undercover at three gyms: Odyssey Fitness in Wilkes-Barre, Danko's Fitness Center in Plains and Browns Gym in Clarks Summit.

We got down and dirty, even down to shower drains taking germ samples. We showed each gym owner our undercover tests after taking the samples to the Clin-Micro Immunology Lab in Clarks Summit.

Dr. Hassan Namdari tested our samples. Other than the dingy shower drain at Browns, we gave him samples from equipment there and from Odyssey and Dankos.

No dangerous bacteria was found in any of the 8 samples, just normal germs say Dr. Namdari "This is something that wherever you go, you're going to be dealing with this," says Namdari.

The gym owners say the clean results are a relief. "I feel confident all the time that my club is one of the cleanest in the area," says Danko.

"It's part of customer satisfaction. If you don't do it, the customers will leave," says Brown.

The customer plays a huge role in keeping things clean as well. The best way to stay healthy at the gym is to play your own part. Spray down your equipment, don't leave it sweaty for the next guy.

Also, bandage up open cuts. Just because you have a cut with germs in it that doesn't get you sick, it might infect someone else.

Gym owners and Dr. Namdari say their best advice is stay away from the gym if you're sick. No matter how hard you scrub, you're putting everyone around you at risk. "They're going to be exposed and they're going to be carrying the organism and god knows what they can get from that," says Namdari.

Things like staph infections, skin diseases and more. But for this I-team test, these gyms lived up to their own clean standards.
