I-Team Update: Some Patient Files May Be Missing - Friday, April 4, 2008 at 4:46PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY --New information about what may have happened to the locked- up dental files of 15,000 patients. We first told you last month that Keystone Dental Center in Wilkes-Barre closed suddenly--leaving patients without their much needed records and x-rays. As consumer and I-Team reporter Jeff Chirico tells us, some of those files may be missing.

Attorneys are working to unlock these doors so patients can get the files but now word that some of those files and computers may have been removed by the manager who closed this practice a month ago.

Susan Schneider/former employee

"A typical hygienist sees 12-16 patients a day. I was scheduled to see anywhere from 30 -50 patients a day."In our studio Friday, Susan Schneider says David Mahon who ran the office after Dr. Irwin Ufberg died, demanded more from employees than they could handle. "All about money. No concern for patients"--or employees. Susan says he owes her and several former workers thousands of dollars.

They haven't been able to ask him for it since he closed the practice and left town shortly after the late Dr. Ufberg's widow Marcy died in February. “We were in the middle of seeing patients and he came out and said send all your patients home. We're shutting down the office."Up to fifteen thousand patient files are trapped inside. But Susan spoke with another employee who knows otherwise."She told me she removed computers, several files and the locks were changed immediately after we left.""patient files or business files?""Both. Both. Selective one’s in his office."

Atty. Marvin Wilenzik/Administrator of Estate says"that stuns me. I had no knowledge of this. This is something we will immediately start looking for." Wilenzik --who was appointed administrator for Irwin Ufberg's estate this week says his first priority is to open the office and assess what's left. "I don't condone that in any way, shape or form. And to the degree that anything constitutes a violation we're not going to look the other way on this."

We have no idea how many patient files are left. I asked David Mahon on the phone if he removed files and computers ---he referred me to his attorney --who told me he had no knowledge.

WBRE News will of course, let you know exactly when those files will be available.
