Ice Cuts Power To Thousands

Ice Cuts Power To Thousands - Friday, December 12, 2008 at 6:11PM EST

STERLING TOWNSHIP, WAYNE COUNTY –As of 6pm Friday, almost 12 hundred families were without power in Wayne County after the ice storm downed trees and power lines. Eyewitness news reporter Jeff Chirico was in Wayne County, he's now live in the newsroom with the icy images.
At the peak nearly 27 hundred PPL customers in Wayne County were without power. Many of those left in the dark are in the Pocono Springs Estates. But for some, the power problem is the least of their worries.

The icy coating looks like "a wonderland." But left plenty of damage. Jim Santitoro, Pocono Springs security officer says “it's almost like a bomb went off this morning."

The stronger trees droop low over roadways. The weaker ones gave way. Wayne Baldwin heard “big boom. Big boom. Shook house pretty good." Baldwin was awaken by a tree crashing into his roof at 3 Friday morning. He's not alone. Ice has virtually paralyzed the Pocono Springs Estates near Newfoundland. Santitoro says “all these roads have damage to electric lines. It's a matter if you're lucky or not."

PPL crews spent Friday pulling limb after limb from stretched power lines along the 55 miles of roads in this development. Mike Mohr of PPL says the company “brought crews from Allentown, Bethlehem, Bucks and Montgomery Counties, and outside contractors from H&M."

If you look closely you can see the thick coating of ice just wrapped itself around these branches. Its no wonder the trees fell and took power lines with it.

Baldwin says “we've been without power since 8 last night." But Wayne won't leave. The roads in this development are icy. This truck had to be pulled out after driving off the road. "I've talked to people who lived here all their lives and they say this storm is one of the worse they've seen."

Wayne agrees, it’s bad. "I haven't even had a hot cup of coffee today."

People in Pocono Springs worry it could get worse tonight. As the temperatures drop, they fear more trees may fall. PPL is not saying when they expect all customers to be back up and running.
