(KINGSTON TOWNSHIP, Luzerne County ) - Ice safety is always a concern, especially after Thursday night's incident in Monroe County. WBRE's Jill Konopka talked with the experts about how to stay safe. It's silent, serene and certainly a nice day to drop the old hook, line and sinker out at Frances Slocum State Park. That's exactly how Mike Viggiano is spending his Friday doing what he loves. Michael Viggiano spoke with WBRE News, "I live for this sport. I mean fishing is in my blood. Being on the ice is my one passion in life." We did check and Viggiano's the only fisherman taking advantage at the lake in Kingston Township. There's only one problem; he's here alone. And he's been in trouble before. Viggiano added, "I've gone through before a couple times. It's almost a yearly tradition for me. Luckily I've been pulled out and have a guy with me to throw a rope and pull me out." Rangers recommend fishing with friends. And to make sure the ice is thick enough for you. That's about 4 inches deep for someone tipping the scales at 2-hundred-pounds. You never know - especially when it's not as snowy and cold out, like it has been in the past. Ranger Darren Kramer said, "If ice fishing go with a buddy. Wear clothes appropriately. Use a flotation device, safety equipment. You should drill a test hole to see how thick it is in the middle of the lake than it is on the shorelines." Viggiano is prepared in other ways too, like strapping on the spikes to keep from slipping around. He also keeps these ice picks right around his neck. Mike Viggiano added, "In case I go through, pull them apart. Pull them into the ice and pull yourself out." And get yourself to safety, just in case. Ranger Kramer added, "Be prepared to go through, and have plan just in case. Let people know what you are doing and where you’re doing it all. Viggiano said, "If you went through there, over there there's a safety ladder and a rope to throw to you."
