BUTLER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Emergency crews rescued two teenagers from the lake inside the Beech Mountain Lake development around 6:30pm.
The call came in around 6pm, and Vally Regional volunteers and other rescue groups were on the scene within minutes to bring the two in off the ice. Initially, boats, hovercrafts and fire crews were called in from all over Luzerne and Schuylkill counties.
One of the teens had a cell phone, and rescue crews instructed them to slowly lower their bodies onto the ice and spread out, in order to evenly distribute their weight until rescuers could reach them. A few of the rescuers went out in a canoe and slid it along the ice to reach the boys. They were brought back to land and immediately checked out by ambulance crews.
One Beech Mountain resident tells Eyewitness News his friend recently did some ice fishing on the lake, and the ice is about 7 to 8 inches deep, so the families weren't extremely concerned. However, he also tells us there's an ongoing problem with people starting camp fires on the frozen lake.
The manager of the development asked all media to leave the scene, as it's private property. Therefore, we were unable to speak with rescue groups, the teens, or their families. | |
