Inmates Form Choir

SNYDERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY - It could be the voices of a church choir flowing from the windows of a big brick building in Snydersville. But those windows have bars and there are no choir robes. That's because those voices belong to inmates.
Inmate Cahterine Friel said, "I love it actually. I think it's a way for us to show that we're more than just inmates." She is serving time for multiple DUI arrests. She told Eyewitness News singing gives the inmates something positive to do. Something positive that they can carry with them once they are free. Friel said, "I'm on the right path and this is definitely something to show that."
Prison Chaplain William Lee said, "It's another outlet for them." Lee organized the choir. He believes positive activities make prison time more producitve. Inmate Liz Raub agreed, "Because when I do leave here I want to do a new beginning so I thought this would just be a head start in all of that."
For those who might say prisoners don't deserve a choir, the Warden says a prison isn't just a place for punishment. Warden Donna Asure explained, "Our job is also to provide services that once they get back outside they stay out there doing good things."
They are good things that show even though the women have made mistakes, there's still something to sing about.
The inmate choir will perform a Christmas concert in the prison Saturday night. Their famlies and members of Jesus the Christ Church will attend. | | |
