Is the Honeymoon Over at Penn Hills Resort?

Is the Honeymoon Over at Penn Hills Resort? - Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 3:35PM EST

ANALOMINK, MONROE COUNTY - As we prepare for vacation season it appears a Pocono vacation icon might not survive. The Penn Hills Resort owner owes more than $1 million in back taxes. One of the resort's founders died a few weeks ago. Now employees say they're not getting paid.
In the 1970s Penn Hills Resort was a honeymoon hot spot. "It was the place," said Acting Maintenance Manager Brian Marshall.

Three decades later it still looks like the 70s there, but there isn't a honeymooner, or any guest at all in sight. "The place is a dump," said maintenance worker Rob Thomas. Marshall added, "Everything is just really out dated."

When Eyewitness News met Marshall he was supposed to be shampooing rugs at the Penn Hills Resort. Instead he was outside smoking. He said, "I don't feel like it. I haven't gotten paid from the last time I shampooed carpets."

Many workers at the resort didn't get paid last Friday and they don't know when their next pay checks are coming. Thomas said, "I got a kid at home and stuff and she needs to eat." Marshall added, "I myself pay child support and I don't want to end up getting picked up for non payment because he can't pay us."

A manager who chose not to be identified said the employees will be paid soon and the resort is doing its best to hold on. But it's tough to pay the bills.

Marshall said several years ago he started to notice guests would check in, take one look at their room and immediately leave. He said, "Then slowly and slowly and slowly they just kept leaving and leaving."

Staff members say the resort owner has not told them what is going on and they want some answers. Marshall said, "I know he's got it rough right now but we're falling with him."

Even though the resort is still open, it looks like the honeymoon may soon be over at Penn Hills.

The resort owner did not return calls for comment.
