Jenkins Township Odor Traced To Factory - Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 11:27PM EST

JENKINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY- Mothballs and nail polish. That's the smell some people say infiltrates their neighborhood. It apparently gets pretty stinky at night.

Their homes border a large tract of land where Acton Technologies has its headquarters. The smell was pesky enough to warrant a violation from the Department of Environmental Protection, a spokesman confirmed Monday evening. He said company officials have been cooperating with the department. Company bosses are apparently looking at ventilation and filtration systems to address the stink.

Neighbors claim the smell has lingered for three years. But say this summer it got pretty bad, forcing them to act. They complained to the DEP, sparking an investigation.

Eyewitness News found some mobile laboratories Wednesday night in a park not far from Acton Technologies. The DEP confirmed they were collecting air samples. It's hoped scientists will be able to determine the cause of the smell.

Acton refused to respond to a message left for comment with a group of people meeting with the DEP late Wednesday.

A meeting is scheduled for Thursday night with township supervisors and members of the community.
