JERSEY SHORE, LYCOMING COUNTY - A bank robber in Jersey Shore threatened the lives of residents. Schools were locked down and streets closed after Sovereign Bank on Allegheny Street was robbed Wednesday morning.
Jersey Shore Police Chief Martin Jeirles said, "A man called the bank and basically said they were going to blow up the bank if they didn't get money and that he had placed a device around the bank or on top of the roof of the bank."
The bank manager then placed the money outside of the bank where it was retrieved by the bandit. Chief Jierles described the man as a black male wearing a gray hoodie and sunglasses with the hood pulled up over his head and up over his mouth.
After a laundry bag was found behind the bank, police evacuated the building and neighboring businesses. Debra Fryer works across the street and was forced out by police. Fryer said, "We were shocked, a bit nervous not knowing what was gong on or how intense it was."
State police brought in a bomb squad to investigate, along with a dog that searched the roof. No explosives were found.
Not long after police released details about the getaway vehicle to the media, the police found a van about a quarter of a mile away from the bank. It is now being processed.
Local resident Tammie Bennett admired the work of law officials. She said, "I have to congratulate all of them for what they do. I really do. I mean it's tough."
The bank robber remains at large. The bank has not disclosed how much money was taken. | |
