STROUD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY - It's keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Month. Earth Day and the Great Pennsylvania Cleanup are just around the corner. People are organizing clean ups for community spring cleaning.

Garbage trashed Tricia Fellman's Easter Sunday Drive. She usually sits in the driver's seat, but heading to a visit she road shotgun to enjoy the spring view. She said, "I was able to really look and see how much litter was thrown all over and I got very concerned."

So Tricia decided to do something about it. She's planning a neighborhood trash pick up. Richard banks will help her. Over the past eight years he has collected thousands of bags of trash. He's tired of litter bugs leaving a mess in his community. Richard said, "They just don't care. They just take the beautiful area of the Poconos for granted."

The Monroe County Litter Control program can help people like Tricia and Richard. Volunteers can pick up protective gloves, garbage bags and safety vests. The supplies are free and once you fill up the trash bags, removal is also free. Jacquelyn Hakim runs the program. She said she needs help now more than ever. "It gets worse every year," she explained,.

Hakim said trash seems to attract more trash. She explained, "When people see a dirty place they're more likely to say well i don't care I'm just going to throw it out the window because there's already stuff out there."

The Litter Control Board is running a public service announcement to fight the problem. It includes a jingle that reminds people to keep their trash in their cars. "Preventive is much better than picking up," said Hakim.

If we keep our trash in the car while we drive, garbage won't trash our scenic view.

If you see someone littering you can report them on the litter bug hot line 1-888-LITTERBUG.
