LAPLUME TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- Earth Day isn't until Thursday, but some got a head start Wednesday. Dozens of college students came together to help their environment in Lackawanna County.
Kids from Keystone College volunteered their time to clean-up the Tunkhannock Creek by their campus.
The students removed everything, including car seats, from the banks of the creek.
"I'm actually surprised, surprised by the car seat, the bike, it's just like people have no problem of disposing of stuff by the water," junior Kandi Zapolski said.
More than 20 students took part in the clean-up. Many were armed with trash bags but others donned water gear and went right into the creek.
"It's important to maintain the environment. Once it's gone, you can never replace it the same way it is," senior Jared Klinger said.
The clean-up was also a way for students to learn about the wildlife on their campus.
"We got a cray fish, a ribbon snake and a salamander," Toni Christopher said.
Students say the goal of the clean-up was to help the environment. They know the trash comes from both purposeful polluting and by accident.
"Some of it is from dumping. A lot of college kids throw their trash over the bank. Another thing is we get flooding here. We've had a couple huge floods here recently," junior James Wassell said.
The creek cleanup is an annual event that's taken place for the last four years. | |
