Kids' Day at PNC Field

Kids' Day at PNC Field - Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 4:16PM EST

Thursday, May 8, 2008 @ 04:16pm EST
(MOOSIC, Lackawanna County) -

It's one day out of the entire school year kids from all over the area get to trade in their books for baseball.

A little rain couldn't keep the Mead family from watching their favorite pinstripes play the popcorn loving Charlotte Knights.

Reporter Jill Konopka asks, "Who's your favorite team? Hayden Mead responded, ‘Jeter.’ "

Hayden and his parents drove all the way from Port Jervis, New York to celebrate a major milestone.

Hayden Mead told WBRE News, "Today is my birthday! Jill Konopka asks ‘And how old are you?’ Hayden responded, ‘four.' "

Teddy Mead is his Dad, "I took the day off. It's his birthday. We decided to take him to the ball park, it's his first game. He loves the Yankees and I said lets go then."

Hundreds of other kids joined Hayden and his die hard Yankees fan Father for Kids’ Day at the Ball Park. Edwin Amaya is a fourth grader from the Bancroft School, "We're coming to see the Yankees." Korie Howard also attends the Bancroft School, "Well, some of them are Red Socks fans, but.

Reporter Jill Konopka asks; “Do you like those people?” Howard shakes his head no." As the buses pulled in, more and more students hopped off and lined up before the gates opened for good. Some a little worried about the weather and what to eat.

Edwin Amaya added, "I brought a sweater and a snack to eat too." Before long, the fans, mostly minors packed the stands. They filled their bellies with all the ballpark favorites like peanuts, popcorn and pretzels.

Greg Moher runs one of the concession stands, "We're making hot dogs, pretzels, coffee and hot chocolate. Hopefully to keep everybody nice and warm."

The chorus sang and the game was played. But the score never mattered. What did, was a day off from school and a great gift for one little birthday boy Hayden said, "My daddy's taking me here." Teddy added, "He's my only boy, it's his birthday. Let him do what he wants."
