Kohl's Coming to Billtown

Kohl's Coming to Billtown - Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 4:45PM EST

Williamsport, Lycoming County-

Attention shoppers! A major department store is moving to downtown Williamsport.

The announcement comes on the heels of other recent economic development projects in the city including new apartment complexes, a Holiday Inn Express, and a Cinema Center.

Mayor Gabe Campana proclaimed, “The store is called…Kohl’s.”

The announcement was met with thunderous applause. Jean Harmon of Montgomery said, “I think this is probably about as good as they’re going to find.”

Campana says it will be the first major department store to open in the city in 60 years. Kohl’s department stores deal mainly in clothing and home furnishings.

The proposed site for the store is the current Williamsport Area School District Service Center, which means those offices will have to be moved elsewhere. Once that happens, the city will purchase the property and demolish the existing building to make way for construction on the new Kohl’s department store.

For a city with a fragile budget, that means putting a previously untaxed property back on the city tax roll.

People we spoke with were excited by the news of Kohl’s coming to town. Raymond Shuler of Williamsport said, “Having a Kohl’s down here, right here in Williamsport will help the community, especially people that live downtown because they don’t have to go all the way out to Wal-mart or K-mart. You know, everybody doesn’t have cars around here and everybody doesn’t like catching the bus.”

Jean Harmon recently visited a Kohl’s department store in Arizona. She thinks people here will like what they have to offer. “They had nice quality products and a large variety which i thought was very good,” Harmon explained.

If all goes according to plan, Campana says the new Kohl’s department store could be open by fall of 2009. He added that more economic development announcements will be made in the near future.
