NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Luzerne County Community College is hosting a "Community Awareness Night" from 6 to 8 p. m. Thursday night at its Campus Center. There will be free food and kids' activities.

Visitors will get a first-hand look at health services available. And organizers say with the struggling economy, some programs have seen an increase in people needing help with substance abuse.

"When someone's life isn't going well, a lot of times that's what they turn to," said Michelle McCabe, Director of the Substance Abuse Education and Training Institute at LCCC. "But we do have groups out there that are willing to help."

That's why health, mental health, and drug and alcohol treatment providers come to LCCC to showcase what they have to offer to the general public.

"People can learn the different ways to get help and the different funding options they may have," added McCabe.

But she says, people can only get help, if they know where to find it.

"LCCC is a great place, a college for the community," said McCabe. "So we want to show people that we're here to help."
