LHU Students Protest Library Plans - Friday, November 20, 2009 at 5:33PM EST

Lock Haven, Clinton County-

Students at Lock Haven University are protesting. They staged a sit-in outside the university president's office Friday.

It's in response to a plan that would remove as many as 60,000 books from the college library.

School officials are eyeing Stevenson Library for additional space. That's because some old buildings on campus are slated for demolition.

University spokesperson Mary White explained, "Unfortunately there are people who have offices there and there is some classroom space. So at least on a temporary basis, we're looking for alternatives to house those areas."

They're looking at possibly weeding out nearly a quarter of the library's books- some of which are old, damaged, or obsolete.

Senior Chris Brittain, of Pittsburgh, said, "It makes you wonder. Out of 60,000 books, is not any single one of them of use? I have a feeling they could still be useful, a lot of them."

And it's not just the books the students are worried about losing. Part of the plan is to possibly put offices in what is now a quiet study area on the library's third floor.

Senior Danielle Tolton, of Lansdale, PA, said, "(It’s) absolutely such a bad idea. Every student comes up here. I come up here sometimes in the evenings and there'll be 30-40 students spread out studying. It's quiet, that's the point."

University officials point out they have yet to make a final decision.

White noted, "A variety of proposals have been presented and a task force is being formed to look into the proposals and come up with recommendations."

Many students believe word spreading about the sit-in protest led to the creation of the task force, which we're told will include students and faculty.

Brittain added, "What we really just want to do is make sure we have a say in what happens, that we know at every point in the process what's going to happen in the future, and that they don't make any rash decisions without us knowing about it."

With regard to weeding the books, university officials say faculty members would be able to fully review the choices before they are removed.
